The Swim for Life Foundation was created to promote the value of swimming ability as enrichment to the lives of all people. Swimming is an activity that can be enjoyed from infancy through the golden years of life. The waters of the world have been used throughout history for survival, for recreation and pleasure, for healing and therapy. The benefits of water are not without cost however, as drowning continues to be one of the leading causes of death world-wide and the number one cause of accidental death for children under the age of 5 in the U.S. It is this fact that has formed the primary goal of this foundation. Drowning prevention efforts have been waged by many dedicated people and organizations but still the tragedies persist. One of the most successful programs was developed in Australia by Laurie Lawrence called Kids Alive. With government and corporate sponsorship (McDonald’s) a dramatic reduction in drowning resulted. The success of the program can be attributed to the multi-layered approach to prevention including barrier protection of pools and spas, supervision, learning to swim, and learning rescue procedures. The program recognized that there is no one solution to prevent drowning rather multiple strategies that must be employed. It is this model that led to the creation of the Safer 3 the multiple strategy prevention message of the Swim for Life Foundation. Please visit the Safer 3 section of this website for more information about the Safer 3 Program. Water safety is the main priority of the Swim for Life Foundation, but we have other objectives and strategic plans, such as:
