Safer Water
Safer Kids Safer Water Safer Response Install, maintain and utilize proper fencing, gates, gate latches, alarms and other safety equipment around the pool.

Around the house

  • Never leave young children unattended in a bathtub, even for a few seconds.
  • Do not leave young children unattended around other containers of water (such as buckets or toilets). Children can drown in just a few inches of water.
  • If you have very young children, install locks on toilets.

Backyard pool or spa

  • Fences should be at least five feet high, separating the pool from the residence.
  • The area surrounding the fence should be clear of objects that could aid a child in climbing over.
  • Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be installed at the top of the gate, out of the reach of children.
  • Gates should never be propped open.
  • Every door and window allowing pool access should be locked at all times.
  • Additional layers of protection include: safety covers, gate alarms, door alarms, and motion-detection devices.

Ocean, lakes and other bodies of water

  • Do not allow children to dive head-first into natural bodies of water or shallow swimming pools.
  • Do not allow children to swim in the area where waves break—the waves are very powerful and can knock a child over or drag him under water.
  • Teach your child what to do if he or she gets caught in a rip current: Swim parallel with the shore until you are out of the current, then swim toward land.
