Safer Kids
Safer Kids Safer Water Safer Response Employ constant adult supervision and swim skill attainment through on-going qualified instruction. Learn proper behavior in and around the water.

Pools and natural bodies of water

  • Always assign an adult “Water-Watcher” who is able to swim. Children should never be left in or near a pool or body of water unattended, not even for a minute.
  • The Water-Watcher should never be distracted by another activity—like cooking, reading or gardening—while children are in or near the pool.
  • Do not rely on floatation devices. A child can easily slip out of them or even remove them.
  • Children and adults alike should learn to swim and maintain these skills year-round.
  • A child should never be considered or treated as “water-safe.” This can cause a false sense of security and lack of supervision.

Behavior in, on and around the water

  • Teach children and Water-Watchers “the pool rules” and appropriate behavior to be used in and around a pool. Post and obey all pool rules.
  • When boating or activities in open water follow guidelines for use of Coast Guard approved PFD’s (Personal Flotation Devices).
  • Become familiar and follow safety rules and guidelines at beaches, lakes and rivers.
  • Know your abilities and your limitations and those of your children.
